Just read the gas meter yesterday it was 00422, the previous reading was 00421 on the 13th July, surely this can't be right?

gas central heating - switched off till winter
gas cooker - just using grill and rings as main part of oven not working ( using a mini electric oven)
hot water - one solar panel on roof

british gas have sent me a bill for 89p!

Not sure what your point is?

The period and the reading (especially) is too small to draw any conclusions. (theoretically could have been 00421.00 to 00422.99 or double).

But well done for taking readings.

so sorry obviously I didn't explain it very well,

a gas meter reading taken on the 13th july was 00421
and yesterdays (26th August) gas meter reading was 00422

which has produced a bill for 89p

so I think it is a very low reading because all I appear to have used is just 1 unit of gas in all those weeks.

    so my point is,

I was wondering if other people think that is an unusually low gas meter reading as well, could the meter be faulty? ,

is that any clearer for you?

Nope....maybe you just didn't use much. Do a test if you want to. Turn the boiler on and set the temperature on the thermostat to max and watch the meter increase.

Well, if your only gas usage in that period has been the cooker hob, then it's perfectly plausible that you have only used one unit. How is the hot water heated (it can't be solar alone, there is always a back up)?
Also depends if your meter reads in 100 cu ft (imperial) or cu m (metric)-there is a difference of around 300% in the size of each unit.
The important figure is the kWh usage, since that's what you are billed in. But I don't see the relevance of your 89p bill, since presumably the billing period is not the same as your measuring period, even assuming that the bill is actual and not estimated?

    we have a combi boiler

and we have decided to move suppliers for the gas supply, from British Gas to E-on so the meter reading of 00422 was used as the closing/opening reading but the final bill from British Gas was a reading of 00562 ?? and this was agreed by both companies.

but as you can see from the photo taken yesterday 3rd october 2011 the reading is 00432, so I assume that our meter is going backwards!!

british gas's final bill was £70.07 but when the correct final reading was used 00422 then they owed us £9.07!!

    Hi Josie64

It doesn't look like your meter's going backwards Josie64 so try not to worry. What seems likely is that an estimated reading has been used for your switch.

Did you contact us with an opening reading when you came over to us? Even If you did, if it was an especially low reading then it may have been rejected and an estimate used instead.

Just as you were concerned by the meter only advancing by 1 unit over the summer, our computer systems are also set up to flag use that appears too low.

There's a system in place for just this sort of thing, known as an ARD or Agreed Reads Dispute. This will mean that both parties correct the reading used in your switch.

It's best to read your meter again and then call us with the two new readings, this will show the change off supply estimate was way too high so we can get it sorted for you.

Once we have this information we'll pass the new opening reading back to British Gas so they can correct your bill, this ensures that you don't end up paying twice for your gas.

Hope this helps, please feel free to get in touch if you need any more info as always happy to help.
