Accident & Sickness Insurance

I am a self employed driving instructor looking to take out the above insurance and would appreciate any advice on companies to contact for the best deals.

    If it was just accident and sickness insurance and you were self employed, there are no issues and this is correctly sold.

    Its only unsuitable for self employed if it includes unemployment cover, as its often difficult to satisft the conditions to claim.

    In this situation you should look for permanent health insurance. There is very little internet coverage on PHI. It is retailed mostly via IFAs.
    I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

    Yes but the OP has got the answer he wanted from DunstonH.

    I would just add that he should make sure the IFA is truly independent and can select a suitable product from the whole market.

    Also, remember:
    • PHI pays income respect of any illness or injury that prevents you working, if necessary until you reach the end of the policy term, whereas a sickness and accident policy will only pay out for up to one or two years;
    • The premium on a PHI policy is specified at outset and written into the contract for the entire term whereas a sickness and accident policy's premium can normally be reviewed (in reality this probably means increased) by the insurer;
    • PHI may specify that it will pay out when you are unfit to do your specified occupation or it may say any occupation you are suited to;
    • Neither will continue to provide benefits if you become well enough to work but there is no job left for you to do;
    • Critical Illness cover provides a lump sum, rather than an income, but ONLY if you are "fortunate" enough to suffer one of the specified conditions. If it is something similar, but not identical - or not sufficiently severe - there is no payout.
