Komplett.co.uk – should I care for 2p?

Options
A couple of points that Komplett claim:

” The price you see after you add an item to your shopping cart is always the price you pay!” ( their exclamation mark!)
”exact shipping cost is visible in the shopping cart before check-out”

I bought some items from Komplett and gave my credit card details. An order confirmation came through. The goods were delivered and everything was fine. When I received my credit card statement I checked it. Komplett had taken 2p more than had been agreed.

Obviously I was a bit puzzled, but it was only 2p. So I emailed Komplett’s customer support. Wow, for rudeness, lack of clarity and an unwillingness to answer a question these guys are premier league. It seems that they believe that 2p is not significant (I assume that is when it is 2p in their favour, but they don’t do clarity).

My mistake was not checking the invoice that they sent almost 24 hours after the order confirmation. This is where they had added the money on (in the shipping costs). I had assumed it was merely a formality.

I called the credit card company. But they were a bit pathetic. Though I was told that they understood my concerns about companies adding small amounts to payments, they have procedures to follow which are more expensive. Thus they simply credited me with 2p - I never even asked for it.

Maybe some will feel that I wrong to question such a small amount, but I was at first puzzled and then annoyed about the contradiction of their assurances with the reality. There is a principle involved. Certainly the attitude of their customer support has convinced me never to go near them again.

Personally, I wouldn't have bothered querying a 2p difference. My time is worth more than that and I wouldn't waste it on chasing something as trivial as 2p. Nor would I have increased my phone bill in pursuit of answers.

HOWEVER, I don't necessarily think that I have the right attitude. The Great British public are well known for their acceptance of things and their unwillingness to complain. If we don't complain about things like this, then feasibly 2p could be added onto everyone's bill, then that would make for a tidy little sum for the company involved.

So yes, I agree, there is a principle involved here. It just depends on how much you are willing to stand up for a principle such as this. Consider it a learning opportunity....you have just paid 2p (or not as the case may be, as you were refunded) to learn that this company has poor customer service and inaccurate accounting.

Well worth tuppence I would have thought. :D

  • I pay a fixed cost for internet access, so there is no additional financial cost for an email.

There was one telephone call to the credit card company, and I made that from work. If I had called from home, it would have been one pence as we use 18866 and it wasn't an 0870 number.

So to answer your question, zero pence. It was only some of my time.
