granite worktop question

Hello,

sorry if this is meant to go else where.

we just had Kashmir white granite worktops fitted by a reputable company who specalise in Granite and marble in Glasgow. I have noticed that after the worktops get wet they go a darker colour which then fades as it dries. Is this normal or does it mean that the granite is not sealed adequately and should I be asking for the company to reseal, if such a thing is possible?

Sorry if it's a stupid question, just they look lovely and were not cheap so I want to treat them well.

Thanks.

  • Speak to the company that fitted it, ours doesn't do that (not white though) and seems on the face of it that maybe it has not be sealed sufficiently???...

I have granite floor tiles, they are highly polished, not sealed and don't change colour at all.

It depends on the type of sealer they used. Some sealers are designed to let the stone breath but prevent staining in which case water will soak in and dry out again. Other sealers will cause the water to bead on the surface. I'd just ask the company what sealer they used. If your worried you can always reseal the tops yourself, it's a simple process. Did they offer to sell you a care kit? Lithofin or Akemi are two well known brands. Just google them.

It's normal, Kashmir White is very porous indeed.

Even with a quality impregnating sealer it will still absorb moisture. It's just the nature of the material.

hello everyone, they are going to come out and reseal, but Alan M suggests that it's the nature of the beast so I am not too worried now,

    thanks again.

Resealing certinaly won't do any harm.

It would be prudent to take a note fo what they seal the top with, buy a bottle yourself and do it once a year.

That will keep your kashmir white, white.
  • I've got a very pale baby blue granite, had it for over 5 years and its never changed colour or stained at all.
I've never had to do hardly anything to it except clean it with stone cleaner once a year and polish with a silicone polish afterwards.
    It still looks brand new.
