New Laptop - possible problem

My other half has bought me a new laptop - Acer Aspire 5742 from Mr Tesco.
It arrived last Monday and was opened and set up late Tuesday. Not every time I use it but its getting more frequent I get five separate inch wide shaded lines from top to bottom on the acer desktop screen. It has only happened to me and I've just showed it to him who is supposed to know everything and he says 'weird'. All the lines disappear when I go into another screen - internet, emails etc.
I'm guessing there is a problem and I know what you will all probably say is send it back - just wanted to know it anyone knew what it could possibly be so I could explain it better to Mr Tesco when I call up.
