USA contents insurance

Hi All,
I am moving to NYC for a year from Sunday (hurricane permitting!). I would like to get possessions insurance to cover me whilst I stay there, i.e. laptop, phone, other possessions.., and I was wondering if anyone had experience with purchasing this?
I have seen policies available in the UK for laptop cover, but am concerned that this wouldn't actually cover me for a 365 day trip. I'll also be in shared accommodation, which may cause extra issues with the policy terms!? I'm not sure if I'll be eligible for cover in the US, as I'm a British citizen.
Any feedback would be much appreciated. Any recommended US providers if possible too?

Get cover whilst there will surely be cheaper, just do the same as you would here and goolge insurance0
