Zero gas usage - continuing bills..?

I've been Money Tipped!
If I went all electric and got rid of my gas appliances, would I continue to receive gas bills for the sheer privilege of having a gas meter which is registering said non-consumption..?

    No you won't be charged if you have a 'No Standing Charge'(NSC) tariff. i.e. a tariff that charges a higher price for the first xxxx kWhs pa and not a daily/monthly charge. The majority of tariffs are NSC.

    I suspect you will retain your dual fuel discount as well.

    Yes you will still get bills and you will get a quarterly query from the supplier as to why you have used nothing. At least I do.

    Make sure you are on a no standing charge tariff.

    I have to ask though why you would want to get rid of your gas appliances as it is usually cheaper to use gas rather than electric for heating.

    As prev poster has said inform gas supplier to arrange for supply to be capped or meter removed,

    That is really intelligent advice. NOT!
    RE-installation of the meter can cost you hundreds of pounds, and possibly over a thousand if you are unlucky.

    This risk can be avoided by simply changing to a contract without standing charges.

    It will cost you approx 250% more to power/heat by electricity than gas.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Silly me I should have read OP's previous posts for the answer. It's for a tenanted property that the OP owns. It will be cheaper for the OP as the OP does not need to get annual gas safety certificates. The tenants won't like it though. Installing night storage heating might be cheaper to run in a small very well insulated modern property but I don't think it will be cheaper in an older property at all.

    I would need to see the current usage patterns are and what the proposed bill will be to form an opinion on whether I'd do it or not.

    BTW it's cheaper for me to heat with electricity. My night storage rates are 5.11p/kWh and the primary gas rate, the only rate I ever used is 8.616p/kWh for the first 4,572kWh per year.

    If they do not do either eventually they will get a letter from the transporter and if they fail to reply or say not using gas it will be turned off in the street. So best to speak to supplier to arrange either of the above or they will continue to be charged at lease the standing charges As the supplier will until otherwise informed continue to pay what is call transportation costs etc

    The choice is their's either continue to pay the standing charges of the supplier or have it capped or the meter removed and if they choose to use gas again in future dependant on what has been done possibly pay reconnection charges to the transporter.

    Not stupid advice just telling it how it is pay now, or possibly pay later.

    Just reread posts, the supplier may choose to ask for supply to be turned off in street themselves to save the costs they are incurring, either way the supplier should be informed sooner or later they will send a metering engineer around to check the meter is working and that the occupier is not pulling a fast one, they will then decided what course of action is to be taken beit getting supply capped (given rental seems best option) or getting meter removed and supply turned off.
