Recommendation for replacement bud headphones

I'm a big fan of the Sennheiser CX-300II (I'm on my third pair) but unfortunately the jack plug on these has snapped in two. I love the sound quality that they produce and and would happily purchase another set of these. However, I'm very reluctant to do so as this is the second time I've fallen foul of the jack plug snapping.

Is there any other bud type headphones with a 3.5mm jack that are as good as the Sennheisers at around £20 a pair with a jack that doesn't break as easily.

Incidentally I've emailed Sennheiser about this problem as it is a design fault with the jack since the changed design of the jack to a longer, bigger jack. Unfortunately, I've not had a reply.

  • Ive had those exact sennheisers in the past and a similar thing happened to me. Ive since swapped them for a pair of Skullcandy Ink'd earbuds (currently £12.99 on play.com) they're on par soundwise with the sennheisers. Ive just noticed on there at the moment they're doing a double pack for £17.99 with a pair of the above and also a pair of lowrider over the ear phones. http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/-/3177/2444/-/19691703/Skullcandy-Lowrider-Headphones-White-Black-and-Skullcandy-In-Ear-Earphones-Double-Pack/Product.html

£18 for 2 pairs of headphones is a good deal. go to play.com and search skullcandy.

The more expensive sennheisers Ive bought have better jack designs, although I havn't seen a newer pair of cx300s.

The cx800s has a small hard plastic shell over the plug and seems to be well clamped down. Usually it is the plug togo but the last 2 the drivers died due to neglect before the plug.

Find some sleeving, possibly heat-shrink type, and attach it to the jack as a strain relief......

Thanks for the tip Brian. Found some of Ink'd buds on play.com for £4.49. As far as I can tell it is actually play.com that are selling them aswell, not one of their sellers. I think these are the ones ofr me!

Creative Labs 630s - have a straight jack and pretty much Cx300s in my book.

I wouldn't hold your breath on Senheisser - they are mass produced in the far east and branded Senheisser -obviously to their "exclusive" technical design.

I saw a reply from them on another forum to "counterfeit items" where they alluded to the fact.

Funnily enough I have a Samsung Tocco Lite which I use for music and this requires an adapter for the headphones - they sell the adapter and "short length" earphones for around £3.00 and these are pretty good for "commuting" use or walking the dogs not quite the same but certainly better than the Senheisser MRRP (who pays the MRRP anyway?)

i have these ones i know they are more than you want to pay, but at that price they are well worth it, also the jack connection on mine is aluminium so would take some breaking!

A colleague of mine has a pair of these that he permanently has plugged into his laptop on his desk. I didn't realise these were made by Creative until I googled them from this post. He likes them and he's had them for a couple of years at least. This is probably down to them not being coiled up very much hand not being transported away fromwork very often. Perhaps there lies the answer. I should maybe think of buying two pairs, one for work and another set for pottering about at home.

Decisions decisions! Skullcandy or Creative? Hmmm.

Why has no one suggested replacing the plug?

Any computer repair shop should be able to do it.

Do you know how much they would charge to do this?

Probably not much different to the £10/12 for the Creatives.

I do use my CX300s at least twice a day and have the surplus cable wrapped in in "bug" like clip (Soft rubber cup over the wound wire -available under the Belkin Brand but mine are unbranded.) Stops them getting tangled all the time and allows me clip them to my coat. Mine is black and cost about 3 squid.

Ultimate cheapo would be to get a 3.5mm jack from Maplins and do it yourself....;)
