Preparing a wall for tiling

Hi guys
Hoping one of you can help me
I have taken all the old tiles off the walls in my bathroom with a view to re-tiling.
Where the tiles have come off some of the old (and i mean old) plaster has come away with it leaving some big gaps.
My questions is, what is the best way to prepare the wall for re-tiling ceramic tiles?
I thought of either:
1. getting the walls replastered?
2. knocking the old plaster off and just using adhesive on the block work to put the tiles on?
3. Fixing wooden battens to the block work and then fixing water-proofed plasterboard to the battens in preparation of tiling?
Any of these sound sensible/realistic?
I'm planning on doing this work myself (apart from if a plasterer is required) and i'm not a tradesman but a keen DIYer - just something to bear in mind :rotfl:
Many thanks

Use hardwall to fill in gaps and level wall then tile over or use board adhesive and dry line the wall with plaster board0

We have had wall replastered before when holes really big but have also tiled direct on after using a PVA glue / water mix. Have also tiled direct onto tiles after washing down first (only do if tiles are ok underneath)

Advice above is ok, except the part about pva. dont use pva, use an sbr or acrylic tilers primer.
Ensure the rest of the plaster is sound too.
You can patch up with a cement based (in a bag) adhesive which will save you having to wait any gypsum based (skim\hardwall etc) to dry for a week or two.0
