Apple Active X and Microsoft.net Conflict - can anyone explain this to me?

I wanted to follow a live stream of the hurricane Irene, being put out by some US friends via their website. I logged on there and got a message saying to view their coverage I needed to run Apple Active X.(? something from Apple).

When I went to download it, I got a system message from my PC operating system saying if I downloaded it, it would disable microsoft.net, used by "System".

Can anyone explain what all this means to me? (I have a PC running Win7)

Apple don't do ActiveX, Microsoft do. Are you sure it wasn't Quicktime?

    Never seen that message before.

Yes maybe it was Quicktime - would that make sense?

Perhaps you could share the URL.

Doesn't make any sense to me, FWIW :)

OK I went to friends website and got message that to view it I needed Apple Quicktime. Gave option to download. So I said yes and downloaded Quicktime Installer and App. Then I ran both to install Quicktime. This generated a system warning message (should have written it down) saying if I went ahead and installed Quicktime, it would override microsoft .net framework, currently running with user "System", as the default. If I wanted to use microsoft .net framework as the default, I would need to reinstall it.

It won't have been Microsoft.NET. Quicktime is a media CODEC and player, NET is a programming framework. I think you mean Media Player settings and it becoming the default player for wav,mp3 etc files.

There have been problems with quicktime and microsoft.NET in a few instances. Best advice is to make sure all the windows updates are installed, then try quicktime again.
