Car Insurance and Moving House

Hi everyone,

My car insurance is currently up for renewal and is due on the 19th September.

I will be moving house (back to my parents, to save a bit of cash) in the middle of October. I have previously had to pay admin fees of £30/40 for changing address, which is more than a month's premium.

It's highly tempting to put my new address down for the new policy quotes, but I know this is probably fraudulent and highly risky in case I do have an accident (touch wood)

Does anyone know of any other way of getting around this or will I just have to suck up the admin cost?

Thanks in advance

(Maybe this would make a good money moral dilemma!)

Check the admin fees before you move, whilst some charge up to £50 some are much less and a few are free.... factor this into your pricing calculations.

Remember also if buying from a broker (eg AA) that whilst quoting online for the 2 different postcodes may look favourable premiums that when you do the adjustment the price may be significantly different as for a new business quote it will check numerous insurers on its panel where as for a mid term adjustment you must stay with the same insurer or cancel and buy new again.

You'll be stung with the admin cost, and the increase of premium due to the new postcode.
The change of premium will be a lot more than you are being quoted for as a new customer, as you'll be captive.
Move back early, and visit your old house occasionally to move maybe?
  • Vehicle must be kept at the address provided to the insurance company at the time of renewal...........is the new address in a higher or lower post code risk area..............you should check before you renew what if any charges they will make aside from the possible difference in premium.........
