How to set-up bills after completion

Hi guys,
My girlfriend and I are considering making an offer on a property we like.
I just wondered how do we go about setting utility bills up, should this be done after contracts have been handled?
If we have a date given to us when we can move in do I need to go online and get myself a gas/electricity provider?
Any advice on how to start would be great as we're FTB and haven't a clue where to start!

If you haven't even offered on the property yet, you have a loooong way to go! Good luck!
The way we have always done it:
Once your offer is accepted, during the conveyancing process you will receive (via your solicitor) a Property Information Form completed by the vendor. This will contain, amongst many other things, details of the utility suppliers.
Upon completion, you get your keys, walk into your new house (and think OMG what have I done?) and take meter readings.
Then as soon as possible (by which I mean days rather than minutes, no need to panic) you phone the utility companies as detailed in the PIF and tell them you have moved in on XXX date, your name, meter readings and whatever other details they ask. They will sort it out and set up your account, send you a bill, etc.
In fact, the vendor may well have told the suppliers all your details already, as part of their moving out process.
Easy-peasy.
You can then worry about finding better tariffs, changing suppliers, etc at your leisure. Or just stick with the same ones. Whatever you fancy.

You've got a long way to go and I'm sure there are many things between now and then that you'll need help with!
This is one of the final steps - and as poopy_f1 says, really quite straight forwrd.0 -
