Q about redundancy and other jobs

Hello all.

I know this is a bit academic however to satisfy my curiosity can anyone advise please?

A couple of years ago I was told my then job was being made redundant. I was eventually offered my current job after months of waiting to hear if anything would become available.

Anyway my question is - the job I do now was offered to another person at the time,( they were not facing redundancy but the manager preferred them to have the job). We both worked part-time and this was a full-time position.

Was it OK for my company to offer this job to another person when they were telling us they were doing all they could to find us another job?

I just wondered in case I am in this position again in the future.

  • Yes . it's completely fine , whilst the redeployment stage means they should try to find you alternative employment it doesn't mean they have to .

Where I work , some colleagues of mine were notified as being at risk of redundancy and were going through the formal redundancy consultation . I pankied as I knew the same would happen for my role as well even though I wasn't as yet placed at risk.

3 of us , 2 who were officially going through the redundancy process and myself applied for an internal role . Because of the redundancy situation they were offered interviews automatically , but mine had to be considered on merit and I was selected for interview stage.

The other 2 were interviewed , but did not get the job it was offered to me - as I was the strongest candidate.

Thanks purplelila, so does that mean that anyone should be able to apply for vacancies regardless of whether they face redundancy?

We were told that any vacancies which became available were to go to those affected only.

Unfortunately my company hasn't finished centralising so more departments are going to be affected.
