Connecting New Flat to Broadband

Hello,
I've just moved to a new flat, and would like to get broadband.
I have a BT socket, however do not know the telephone number to my property, nor do I have any service (such as BT line rental) subscribed.
When I tried to sign up for TalkTalk, they said I need a Landline, and asked for my telephone number.
Do I have a telephone number? I was told I was ineligible for their special offer advertised, and put on a £19 a month contract (though still have chance to cancel
).
As I am a new customer, do I need something new installed or something?
Thanks,
Jay

Cancel it now! Go to the Plusnet website and do a check on there - it will ask you for your postcode and address and it will tell you what they can provide to you. The basic package is about £6-50 per month and slightly more if you want to have a landline with them.0

I second SteveJH200. I have no ulterior motive - I'm just impressed with Plusnet for both broadband and home telephone. Their UK call centre is excellent and I can't fault them on price either. Top marks, in my opinion.

Plug a phone in it.
if you get a dial tone - phone your mobile and see what number comes up
if you don't get a dial tone - decide if you want any TV service better than Freeview. If the answer is:
Yes - decide if you want Sky or Virgin.- Sky - Phone BT as you'll need a BT landline
- Virgin - Phone Virgin and get a Virgin phone, broadband and TV package
you can't get broadband till you've found out if you have an active phoneline.0 -
...and once you ask bt to activate a line, there's normally an up-front cost and a minimum 12-month contract for line rental before you can move to an LLU ISP. Be very careful to research/ask the right questions before agreeing to anything.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0
