Any financial help available for college course?

Hi there,

My 16 year oldsister has just completed her GCSE's and is about to start a course in college. She has already had to spend about £200 for uniform and equipment, etc. But as she has no job, my parents have paid for them.

My parents both earn over the usual threshold, so unfortunately things like EMA etc don't apply to her. What's annoying, is these schemes don't considers my parents outgoing, and they are not in a position to support her financially.

Does anyone know if there are any schemes, bursaries or other financial aid that she may be entitled to?

I thought this might be the case, but in the small town we live in, there are just no jobs for 16 year olds! It's so tough!

I don't know all the ins and outs (unfortunately the person who does is banned!), but I think the parents still get child benefit, so this should be used to help your sister, but obviously parents eh!

If she needs money there are plenty of threads on MSE for suggestions (ebaying, surveys etc.) here, it maybe worthwhile asking for their help.

Why would the MSE team ban a seemingly decent member of the board?

There is a 16-19 bursary for people in further education if that's any help? I've not read the eligibility conditions as that will apply to your sister but you can take a look?

Oldernotwiser, she knows a lot about education benefits. As to why, no idea, neither does she, but she thinks she may have been drunk at the time

Ouch. You have a very good knowledge of the student support system. It would be a shame to refrain yourself from giving advice to those who are very appreciative of having someone like you here, for the sake of oldernotwiser being banned?

I'm sure she would like you to continue supporting the MSE users.

Certainly banned. ONW doesn't even know why.

I think the kick in the teeth over MSE's declining of me writing up an eligibility and financial assessment guide was bad enough, but removing someone else who is constantly helpful was just a push too far. I'm on hold until it's resolved.
