Travel Insurance - when to start cover?

Hello all.
At the end of Feb I will be booking flights to Lanzarote for october, using half tesco deal tokens and half cash. We will also be having a small holiday in the UK in June. We currently don't have any travel insurance. So I was thinking to take out an annual policy with travel-insurance web as I believe they cover tesco vouchers as well - please correct me if I am wrong in this.
So, I was wondering, the insurance doesn't have to be in place before you book does it? I mean, I could start the policy for the start of June, I don't have to start it before I buy the flight tickets in Febuary?
This sounds like a very silly question now but it is a lot of money and hard-earned vouchers and I don't want to lose them if anything goes wrong!
Thank you for any help

There would be no point in you having travel insurance if you have no travel to insure.
I agree take it out when you book your holiday.
I take it that you do not have any pre - conditions (medical wise) which may up your premiums?
If you are unsure talk to them now to see how much more they will want as a premium.0 -
Yup, annual cover take out as soon as you have booked holiday, if you had to cancel the holiday before you took the insurance out you obviously would have no cover. Single trip insurance is different as you are insuring everything to do with that 1 trip so whilst you buy it when you get the holiday you put the "start date" as when you actually leave for the holiday. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

Oh I'm glad I asked now as it seems it wasn't such a silly question. Thank you for your responses. I will get some insurance sorted out!
Thanks
