!Graphics Card Help Please!

Hi,

Need to upgrade my graphics card (AGP) so I'm able to play some decent games.

My system Specs are:
Windows XP
768mb RAM
100GB H/D

At the moment have crappy one: NVIDIA GeForce MX 420 64mb.

Willing to pay max. of £50.
Is a GeForce 6600 128mb for £47 from scan.co.uk any good?

Cheers in advance for any help

The scan £47 is not just a 6600 its a 6600gt, its a really nice card.

Radeon and geforce are just brand names used by ATi and Nvidia, its like the difference between ford and vauxhall.

I would avoid the 9550 that thomas suggested, it does not game well at all, I have one, I thought I knew better, I do now :o

If you are prepared to buy 2nd hand, look at "9800 pro" on ebay, there are some bargains out there. Just don't pay more than £40.

I had to check that for myself as I paid over £100 for a 6600GT less than a year ago. Well worth going for.

  • Thanks for the replys,

    I think I'll go for the 128mb 6600GT,

Will the 128mb performance be a lot different to a 256mb card?

Also how much power will it require?

    Cheers

If you are comparing it to the 256meg one on scan, LINKY
the 256meg one has faster memory and a faster graphics processor,
    it is a better card,
    its worth £20 more,
but its out of stock and if I wanted it now, I probably would not wait.

you could probably pick up a 6800gt or even ultra if you dont mind second hand, ive seen my rig have probs with a 6600gt on doom3 while my 6800 ultra which i picked up last year for £100 spanks it.

Anyone got an similar tips for getting a graphics card for a PCI-E slot? I have a Geforce 7300SE at the moment that came with the PC, but it uses some of the main memory and I'm looking to replace it. I'm hoping not to spend more than sixty quid, since I don't plan on running anything more taxing than the Half-Life 2 engine.
  • X1300 would be alright or the pro version. They're a fair bit better and cheap. Or perhaps even better would be a X1600 series card. Or if you're an nvidia fan 6800GT
