loft insulation

I am after some advice.
We had loft insulation done about 3 months ago (got it done for free as we are eligible for child tax credits) by one of the companies.
Yesterday somebody else turned up at our house(my wife let him in), he checked the loft and said that it is only 60mm thickness and the requirement is 210mm.
He is saying he will do it for free as we are eligible.

I am confused.
Is this some sort of a scam? How can it be 60mm thick, if the previous guy has done it to the legal requirements?

can you not go into the loft and look to see exactly what is there?
also there is no "legal requirement"

  • There is no legal requirement but a company would be breaking Part L of Current Building Regs if they installed 60mm insulation instead of 210mm. They would be liable to upgrade to meet current regs if they really had installed this.

One of two things has happened here; either company A pulled a fast one and got paid to install 210mm of insulation when he only installed 60mm or (and in my opinion more likely) Man B is pulling a fast one by claiming man A did the above so he can then get paid for doing it all again.

Best advise is to check your loft thickness yourself and then report either man A or man B to Trading Standards as one of them is pulling a fast one and being paid for it (out of our money by the way).

Or man B is simply trying a ruse to get inside your house. Why on earth did she let him in?

There has been another thread about a company 'cold-calling' about loft insulation. Don't touch them with a bargepole, good firms don't need to tout for business. They've probably taken on a load of salespeople with no (or minimal) salary and a promise of huge commission. Not your problem to keep them fed.

    Here's the other recent thread.

You can check the depth of the newly-installed insulation yourself and will need to take it up with those installers if it is not what they said they supplied. It is possible they didn't fulfil their contract properly. Two years ago I got a WarmFront grant as I got Child Tax Credits. Two rough Geordie men arrived several hours late to do the job and said "We'll just look in the loft first, darling", then said they couldn't work up there because the ceilings are sheet asbestos - this was pointed out to the original surveyor - they said they weren't issued with CAT3 masks and "Sorry darling (how DARE they call me 'darling'), you can take it up with Eaga if you don't like it, but we're not risking our health for you". A lot of shouting ensued, I was in tears with rage, but let them drive away with MY insulation, I was so upset I didn't think to insist they left it so I could lay it myself. And I hated the little creeps so much I dreaded the thought of them being sent back here, I was seriously ill anyway and too fragile for any more quarrels, so I'm quite sure they will have done quite well out of selling my insulation for their own benefit. Nasty little men, but stupid me, can't do anything about it now, but I'm really suspicious of all these people.

Hope you get it sorted out one way or another.
