hi, if you own and have paid out a bit of dosh on a good hd tv or projector then get this dvd player (http://www.crtprojectors.co.uk/dvd_players.htm) the Oppo DV-981HD! to get the best picture quality you deserve from your hd tv.

it will upscale pal (region2) and ntsc (region 1) standard dvd's to hd quality (1080p/1080i/720p)via hdmi lead (i recommend this one;

the oppo does a job just as good as some Denon dvd players which are over £1000!:grin:

    I picked up a Samsung DVD-HD860 for a penny under £60 from Comet before chrimbo and it works a treat.

    They way I see it as they only upscale standard DVD's so they are not the same quality as HD DVD's

    Not sure how right I am on that

    Correct but you do get a better picture quality, don't have to pay a grand or whatever they are down to now, but more importantly can use your standard DVD Collection and give you a better picture, saves replacing with HD DVD's

    I recommend the Bush 2055HD that Sainsbury's are selling for £40 (in Belfast anyway).

    The packaging actually claims that the player is for HD DVDs but *also* (their words) upscales standard definition DVDs. The consensus is that it doesn't actually do the former.

    I don't have any HD DVDs to test on it but I won't be rushing to buy any because people at https://www.AVForums.com have done so in vain and reckon that it's an upscaler only.

    You'd hardly expect a player in the new format at £40 yet anyway.

    However, even just viewed as an upscaler using the HDMI connection the quality is extremely good.

    I haven't seen any of the more expensive machines and the only reason I went for this Bush one was its low price. It's for my dad and he would be annoyed if I bought him an expensive one. The TV we got for him is a respected brand so that's the main thing.

    No HDMI lead is provided but there's a fairly decent one at https://www.play.com for £9.99 and that's what I set it up with.

    This player is definitely worth a punt - if you're not happy you can probably take it back for a refund but I would wager that this player gives other sub-£100 upscalers a run for their money.

    Amazon product spec here, although obviously there is a bit of doubt over what this machine actually is, given the misleading packaging:
