DVD/Blu Ray region encoding and Ripping

I've got a pile of discs that I want to rip onto an external HDD for when I'm travelling. They're a mixture of UK and US discs.

Up to now I've only ripped UK DVDs on the PC, will the US ones work with the same software or will I somehow need to change the region of my DVD drive and software?

Also recently I've put a blu-ray drive in my PC and I want to rip those to .MKV format to play on the move. Can anyone recommend any decent software for this. Again I have a mixture of UK/US discs and want to rip them both.

I've tried google but I'm more confused than ever.

Unable to help you as I am an OSX user.

I used a piece of software called MTR to encode all of my DVD collection to hard disk. Well worth doing - even if it did take several years to complete.

I think DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter were useful when trying to do this on the PC.

I recycled all of my plastic DVD cases at my local Sainsburys.
I recycled all of the paper sleeves via kerbside recycling.
