However, that's not to say you aren't paying towards making things 'greener' by taking a green tariff, or by choosing a greener company; more money in their coffers means they can build more green power sources and research and improve more.

    Are you sure?

Maybe a token goes in that direction (for marketing purposes).

I'd expect much of the premium for tariffs from a 'green' marketed company eventually finds its way into the Venture Capitalist who saw a lucrative oportunity to provide the seed finance to get the 'green' company off the ground.

Gas isn't just gas what a silly thing to say. I get my gas from Marks and Spencer so I know that mine is better quality...

    Or even more up-market:

"Me-Ethan" by Victoria Beckham, for example.

Or for real exclusivity, "GASS" by Armani.

The company that bills you for the gas, is called the supplier. They do not produce or pipe the gas any more than Tesco slaughters the cow that is ( partially ) on your plate tonight.

The company that transports the gas doesn't want to sell it to you any more than an abattoir wants to sell you a steak.

The tories sold off practically everything the government owned whether tangible or intangible, as long as profit can be made, it doesn't matter.
Its not the only bizarre and abstract business model.

the same gas is flowing into my house is it not? gas is gas so how do British Gas claim that I'm now using their gas not someone elses?

In short, the simple answer is the meter readings. By taking a meter reading (or estimating one) the new company are basically saying this is where we start supplying you from and any gas you use after this point we are the ones who supplied it.
