Hi all I emailed mbna 8 months ago to close my credit card until I reduced the balance a little, now I have, does anyone know know if I would be ae to reopen this? There is still a balance and I pay every
Month so just wondered if it is just straight forward to email them and ask to reopen it!!! Any advice would be great thanks

If you had a balance 8 months ago, they would not close your account anyway, they just don't do that unless you've settled the balance and asked them to close account.
  • The account probably would've been closed to all intents and purposes as in the OP wouldn't have been able to spend further on it. It wouldnt be fully closed until settled, but on the system it would show as closed (but with a balance) and they cant reopen a closed account. You have to reapply.

Are you sure they closed it and didnt just put a block on it or reduce your credit limit?
  • Thanks you! I certainly wont be re-applying and adding a further credit search to my file, it can stay (closed) until paid in full! I just thought it would be an easy task asking them to re-open it, as i apy it every month you would not think i would need to re-apply!

The card is CLOSED as i asked them to close it, this was so i could not used the card while i reduced the balance by a few hundred! but now i have i wanted to re-open it in case of emergancies.

    Thanks

By all means call them and ask but I reckon it'll be a bit fat no.

With all due respect, you asked them to close it so what is the problem about needing to re-apply to open it again?

    It's a credit card, not a door.

Hi, was this not a case of them increasing the interest rate from say 16% to 25% so you then had the option to stay at the 16% rate but you could not use the card anymore ??

I have had this in the past and it was possible to 'reactivate' the card but it would have been at the higher interest rate !!

MBNA are looking to get out of the UK market so I wouldn't think they'd be in a hurry to reopen an account that could have gone delinquent
