    Eh? ;) Usually, well if HR are recruiting for the post, they need to know all of the requirements before posting it so naturally HR would know what skills and experience the incumbent would need.

    As in, if they have no perfect matches, they may compromise on someone without them all - which they don't know until they have the CVs

    Although HR don't necessarily write up the job spec, they ought to have a copy on file to be able to issue on request. Not everywhere where jobs are listed include a proper description, so its usually worth calling to get the specifics. Not only will you then know, but you can also tailor your application more directly towards it.

  • Right well bit of an update. Once again I have made it to the interview stage. How do I get the job this time? They obviously must see something in my CV or I wouldn't of made the interview stage twice.

    have you made a list of the essential and desirable characteristics listed in the job and summarised how you met them?

    what was the interview like last time? odds on same questions...

    Sometimes there's nothing more you could really do, its just that someone else has something you don't.
    I was turned down for one job, but had a friend working there, and his dad was the head of the dept I'd applied in - turns out I was choice number 2, and only because some other guy had a qualification already (even though no qualifications were required for the job).
    Second time (just last month, different place) I would have been second choice except for one guy who already had programming experience - again it wasn't something directly related to the role; the company just saw that as a useful skill-set to add/strengthen in their business.

    If you can remember anything you particularly struggled with in the interview last time, just prepare for it. Other than that be professional, show that you're eager for the position and do research on the company. If they tell you names of who will be doing the interview, see if you can research up on them too...

  • First of all, congratulations on getting an interview for the second time.
    I agree that they obviously look favourably upon your CV despite any lack of qualifications.
    Did you ask for feedback last time? If so, it might help you this time.

    FWIW I have hired some great guys into IT with severe dyslexia and few/no GCSE's. IT is one of those areas where an awful lot of weight is placed on experience, and less on academic qualifications. If you have the right attitude and personal fit, you stand every bit as good a chance as the others :-)

    I agree with this, one of the best programmers I ever worked with left school virtually unable to write with a pen but give him a computer with a spell checker and he was able to write as well as anyone else. In all the years I've known him he's never been out of work, moving from contract to contract mostly on recommendations.

    Since they're interviewing you I think it's safe to say that the paper qualifications don't matter to them as much as the experience you have. So, emphasise the experience and big up your ability to learn new things by yourself when needed. Good luck with the interview.

  • Well to stop me making a fool of myself again I decided to phone this morning and just enquire about the qualifications/experience needed. Oh and surprise surprise yep a 3 level qualification needed and 2 years experience in a similar role. I decided to save myself from the embarrassment and cancelled, they enquired why and I told them and they said OK, I'm shy and being stuck in a low paid job for so long has killed my confidence so I couldn't sell myself anyway so was probably the best thing.

    If you read my post here I've been searching the job centre for a new job for years, its rare to get one local let alone one i'd enjoy let alone one I'm qualified for so I should of knew it was to good to be true really. I can't blame the job centre it has to be this firms fault. Time to avoid in future.
