Hi, Iam shortly going to attempt to change the oil in my car in the near future :eek:.
Is it worthwhile buying a "big name" brand such as Castrol or Duckhams or would it be ok to buy a budget oil from Asda or Wilkinsons, or, even get it done in garage?. Car is a Suzuki Baleno, W reg.

depending what its used to is the way forward
let me explain
if its had cheap stuff in till now or few and far between changes then it may have built up a resistance to oil blow by
if you put a good quality oil in with all its detergent properties then this oil might do more than good and say wash any build up of coke on the piston crowns and start using oil
personally at this age i would buy cheap stuff so long as it meets specification and is of the right thickness as recommended in your handybook
just like that

Also depends what you mean by cheap.
My Local Motor Factor has 5/30 fully synthetic at £20 for 5L to the same spec as the brands. They aslo do a semi synthetic "diesel" to full spec at £15.
I also noticed in Asda this week that they do a 5/30 fully synthetic at the same price. Which was about £15 short of a well known brand in a smaller "can".
Or then you can get the sub £10 mineral stuff to a lower specification but that is another story.
You might even consider the offer that National Tyre usually run but just make sure they don't push you into unnecessary work on top. They use "branded" oil with specification dependent on car type. By the time you have brought the oil filter you may appreciate this option as it wouldn't be much more."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

As long as it meets the specifications for your vehicle I wouldn't worry about it.
Also remember that some of the "cheap" oils are re branded premium oils.
Do your research on line if you are worried.0
