cashback from morrisons

Hi not sure where to post this, so thought as it involved money from my bank account i would put it here, as i did not think it would be that appropiate in the shop threads, anyway the other day i went into morrisons and did some shopping, i spent £5.56, and asked the cashier for £40 cashback, so making it £45.56, when the amount flashed up on the pin reader machine it only said £5.56, and working for morrisons i know they have just finished rolling out to every store a new till system, which part of inludes when you want cashback it flashes up on the pin reader machine first and you have to press enter before entering your pin, so noticing this did not happen, i questioned the cashier who told me that she put it on, and sure enough when the receipt came off it showed the £40 cashback, so the cashier gave me the said cashback.
Anyway later that day i checked my online banking only to find that morrisons had actually only asked for £5.56 from my bank account(on my account all money is taken out of account at time of transaction), so in effect i got the cashback for free, i understand that once morrisons realise the mistake they will come after me for the £40, but what i would like to know is how long have they got to rectify their mistake, and secondly how will they claim their £40 back, will they just take it straight out of my account?, will they have to contact me first to let me know there has been a mistake and they will be taking the money, and how long will it take them to take the money once they realise, will it be a matter of days or weeks does anybody reckon, and lastly i dont get paid for a couple of weeks and things are a bit tight at the moment, so say i spent the money now, and then they were to take the cash and make me go overdrawn and recieve a fine for going overdrawn, would i be then able to go after morrisons to pay the fine, becuase if i have not noticed the mistake they made, and they have not informed me thay are going to take the money, it is not my fault i have spent money i thought was legitemately mine;), and before anybody says it, i do understand that there is a every chance they will try a retrieve the money, i just want to cover every base thats all, and for the record this mistake did not happen at the morrisons i work for, but 1 on completly the opposite side of the country
TIA

Morrisons have up to 6 years to claim the money but are more likely to take a few days. They can take the money directly from the account as you have authorised them with your debit card. They are not responsible if you incur charges for going overdrawn. It's your responsibility.0

If only £5.56 showed on the PIN machine Morrisons are only authorised to debit that amount.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0

Morrisons would not be able to the claim the other £40.00 as when you enter your PIN to authorise a payment your only authorising the amount shown on the PIN machine.
Should the error get picked up Morrisons would have to write to there bank to contact the OPs bank then the OPs bank would have to write to the OP.

I don't see how it will get picked up. I think the till will just cash up as £40 short.0

I don't think this transaction will be traced back to you. But it could be. (Edit: looks like I was wrong!)
I remember once the chip and pin machine in Tesco got over excited and never gave me the opportunity to enter my pin. The lad on the checkout said "oh it does that occasionally" and confirmed the payment had been collected so off I toddled with my £120 of groceries.
Several years on I'm still waiting for the payment to be debited to my credit card.
I don't think I'll write to complain about the Clubcard points I didn't get.0 -
i have had cashback before where it has - for some reason - went through as 2 transactions when it appeared on my statement. I'd wait a few working days and see.0

Funnily enough I worked at tescos a good few years ago, I did my shopping there once and it came up to £96, so I gave the cashier £100 cash, and she gave me £96 change back:DTake every day as it comes!!0
