ESA is an out of work benefit. It is the alternative to JSA for sick people and people that are unable to work.

DLA is for people with disabilities that have additional care/mobility needs because of their disability.

you can claim both at the same time.

You explained it perfectly, though just to add DLA can be claimed whilst working also (as long as the work doesn't contradict your care/mobility needs)

ESA is an out of work benefit yet you can work and claim it too.

No. It cant be paid at the same time as SSP.

There is permitted work though - you can work up to 16 hours and still receive ESA. Bit nuts IMO.

Yeah as above. Both can be received for mental or physical health problems. But they're very different animals... ESA being the benefit awarded to those unable to work due to illness/disability to cover day to day living expenses... DLA awarded to those with illness/disability giving rise to fairly specifically defined care or mobility needs in order to cover extra costs associated with living with disability.

    Both are contradictory.

DLA focuses on what you can not do - yet it is not an out of work benefit.

ESA focuses on what you can do but is generally for those who cannot work or have limited work capability.
