Domestic Electrical Installation Certificate

Hi all,

I've recently had some electrical work done on my house and asked that I received a Domestic Electrical 'Periodic Inspection Report' be produced.

What I've been given is a "Domestic Electrical Installation Certificate"! I notice that on the certificate that there is a section for 'Schedule of Items Inspected'.

The question that I have is whether the 'Domestic Electrical Installation Certificate' is deemed to cover all the areas required / deemed to be a replacement to the 'Domestic Electrical Periodic Inspection Report'?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

  • The Electrical Installation Certificate is to be used only for the initial certification of a new installation or for an alteration or addition to an existing installation where new circuits have been introduced.

For the Certificate to be valid, the Schedule of Circuits / Distribution Board Details must be completed and attached.

Your electrician may have completed it for the whole installation including the existing circuits in which case the certificate covers all the essential tests and measurements of a periodic inspection, but the Periodic Inspection certificate specifically notes any defects and items requiring attention.

    Thanks for the reply.
He installed a new consumer board and a smoke & heat detection / alarms (new circuit) and sort of indicated to me that he was inspecting as he went along.
Am I right in thinking that if he hasn't supplied an inspection report, there weren't any defects identified? More importantly would letting agents that request a periodic report accept a installation certificate as an alternative?

Also as he fitted a mains powered fire detection / alarm system, should he be giving me an additional certificate for this as well?
  • You should get a BS 5839 Part 6 certificate for a domestic smoke alarm
    baldly going on...

and has therefore treated all the circuits off it as being a new installation to current regulations, which is correct.
