Haggling works!!

I have been with BT stuck in an 18month contract paying £40 per month for broadband and phone. It has been due to laziness that it has taken me until today to contact BT to ask if I am still in contract and ask for my MAC code and look for a better deal. To my surprise I haven't been in a contract for a couple of months (they weren't in a hurry to tell me that!). I told them that I could get unlimited broadband and phone deal for £25 per month (a figure I plucked out of the air based on what friends have told me). BT have offered me 40GB broadband, phone and line rental for £23.90 per month! So don't be afraid to haggle, it really works and I am now saving nearly half of what I was paying.:j Thanks Martin for the tip x

  • Haggling does work. I am with Talktalk with Anytime calls, free USA and Europe calls and Broadband. BT offered me a better deal reducing my monthly from £36 to £24. Talktalk met this for 3 months then I had to haggle again which again lasted for 3 months. Then I phoned them and said having to ring every 3 months was stupid. I was then put through to someone else and offered an 18 month contract with free broadband (I have always paid for Broadband because I live in a rural area). My Bill is now £23 per month with all the previous deal and caller display. Keep haggling folks.

Does that involve any prepayment? Does it break down as £13.90 line rental and £10 broadband? I might try that one....

There are a lot of broadband offerings for less than £10/month. Plusnet for one.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Only if you are on a Market 3 (or some Market 2 ) exchanges. The cheapest Plusnet package for Market 1 exchanges is £12.99:(
  • To Happy MJ, yes the line rental is £13.90 and then £10 for 40MB broadband. You can get cheaper deals, but I like the service BT provides.

Same here. Especially seeing as though I am on BT Basic line rental at £4.80 per month. BT Broadband came with Broadband Talk at the time which includes free evening and weekend calls. If I leave I will lose my BB Talk number and I can't get that back. It comes with outbound call barring on mobile, international and premium rate numbers and also has caller number display. So my entire bill will be £14.80 per month including free evening/weekend calls, free BT Openzone minutes with my laptop. 40GB download allowance. If anyone can beat that with the features I have I want to see the deal.

Which one? I found plusnet at £11.49 per month for 60GB (I need at least 40GB) plus £25 activation fee plus £4.99 for the router. That makes it £14 a month.

And another £5 a month for a prioritised connection. So that's now £19 a month.

For the vast majority of users, 10GB is more than adequate but, for those needing more, higher prices result. I view it the same way as ordinary telephone use - the more calls you make, the more you pay.
