Consumers have been warned to check packets of Nurofen Plus after it emerged that thousands of them could contain a powerful prescription-only anti-psychotic drug.
The public healthcare regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), has told the public to be “extra vigilant” when buying and using the everyday painkiller.
The warning came after strips of an anti-psychotic drug called Seroquel XL were found in three packets of Nurofen Plus in branches of Boots in the Victoria, Beckenham and Bromley areas of London.
While Nurofen Plus contains codeine and is used to treate acute or moderate everyday pain, Seroquel is a powerful drug used to treat illnesses such as schizophrenia, mania and bipolar depression.
The MHRA has stopped short of recalling Nurofen Plus. Rather it has issued a so-called ‘Class 4’ alert, the least critical class of alert, to all pharmacists to make them aware of the problem.
Ian Holloway, from the MHRA’s defective medicines report centre, said: “People should check to see if they have any affected packets of Nurofen Plus. If you do, return them to the pharmacy where you bought them from. If you have taken the tablet and you have any questions, speak to your GP.”
No other types of Nurofen product are affected. All the Nurofen Plus packets affected contain 32 tablets. Their batch numbers are 13JJ, 57JJ and 49JJ, with expiry dates of 03/2014, 05/2014 and 05/2014 respectively.

you will know if you get an infected pack when you open it, because:
Nurofen is silver tinfoil with Nurofen written on it
Seroquel XL is gold tinfoil with Seroquel XL
it is also being treated as a criminal act as apparently there is zero reason how they could be cross packaged as they are made and packaged in completely separate locations and factories, and all wrongly packaged packs have all been sold in one boots in london.0 -
Sadly this kind of thing isn't a one-off. Companies are having to constantly increase their counterfeiting measures to try to stay one step ahead. In this case the 2 drugs are made by 2 totally different companies so it isn't a packaging accident0

That explains why I still have a headache, but the voices have gone quiet...0

The makers of Nurofen Plus have recalled all remaining stock.
Consumers are advised to return any packs of Nurofen Plus to a pharmacy.
