Bank account for living abroad

As a UK language student living in China I get charged every time I use the ATM. What's the best way to avoid account charges? Is there a UK bank which offers a great account for overseas students? Should I open a Chinese bank account, and if so, which bank? Thanks!

I think HSBC is the best choice as they will have some knowledge of things outside China, however banks in China have all sorts of fees. There are restrictions on how many pounds or RMB you can exchange, but it's always better to exchange large amounts0
