Combe Down village is lovely! Right next to the Uni too. Also Bathwick Hill and Widcombe. But, prices are expensive in these areas too though (same as the rest of Bath though lol). Areas to avoid which are near to the Uni are Whiteway - although not too close to Uni anyway, and Foxhill. Do you need to be in driving distance or walking/cycling?0

Preferably walking or a short bus journey.0

By bus, Bathwick Hill or Combe Down then. But to be honest even if you are in the town itself there are plenty of buses to get you to Uni. There aren't many places to live where you could walk to get there (unless you are fit!!!)0

Avoid the Snow Hill area if possible, and Oldfield park or Twerton - the former is fairly rough, Oldfield Park is rammed with student houses so it can be noisy (and grotty), and Twerton isn't great. Other predominantly student area is Bear Flat, but that's a bit nicer than the others and could be an option.
Combe Down is a good bet - I lived there for several years and it's close enough to the Uni (and a flat walk, but long). There are buses that go to/from Uni/town but they are not that frequent. I would cycle or get some transport (scooter for example).
Incidentally, are you going to be studying at the Uni - if so, why not try to get a room in polden court (assuming you are a post grad)? Of course, if you are working there, then thats not great!0 -
To be honest it depends on your budget. I was a police officer in Bath for 7 years so have a fair bit of experience in which areas are 'less desireable' than others. These would include Whiteway, Twerton, Foxhill and Snowhill. And they are right about cycling, as Bath is in a dip surrounded by 6 (?) hills, anywhere out of the city centre is uphill! Give us a shout when you have narrowed some down and perhaps we can help a bit more.0
