I've just set up an ebay account to sell some things. I've only put in a couple of books to start with as I'm kind of nervous. Can anyone explain to me the PayPal thingy. I set up on PayPal as this seemed the preferred method of payment. How does it work?

In my understanding paypal is kind of like a 'middle man' - it enables you to accept credit card payments online into your paypal account and then to transfer them in to your bank account. There are lots of pros and cons of using this system but the biggest pros are that its quick and lots of people are familiar with it. You get charged fees and once you start selling lots i'd make sure you are a bit more gen'd up on its pitfalls but hope this helps to explain what it is??

If you have ticked the 'accept paypal' box on your auction and display the paypal logo then you need an upgraded account, otherwise you can only take paypal payments that come from an exisiting balance (ie from another seller) and not via someone loading the account from a debit or credit card.
If you don't have the upgraded account what will happen is that the first time someone tries to pay you using a debit or credit card funded balance you will get a message from paypal saying you need to update to be able to accept the payment.

Are there any disadvantages to upgrading? Don't thry want to see your bank statements?0

The disadvantage of the upgraded account is that you are then charged for every payment you receive. However, since you can't use the paypal logo unless you take all paypal payments you don't really have a choice unless you give up on paypal altogether.

I seem to do perfectly well in accepting paypal payments from cleared funds only (and that doesn't have to mean a sellers account - any buyer can register a card for payments), and then Card payments through Nochex. I think that as long as you clearly state this in your listing then you've nothing to worry about..
At least that's my experience of the past couple of years0
