Query re insurance claim

Evening everyone I was looking for some advice
Recently I managed to burn my hall carpet with an iron. I've had the assessor out today who said that the carpet would have to be replaced. He then stated that a like for like replacement would cost around £25 m2
I've just spoken to the person I bought the house from (who fitted the carpet in 1999) who said that it cost him £70 per m2 when he bought the house.
I've checked my policy docs and they state that they will replace any items covered to the same standard as the old item.
Should I contact the assesor and query his valuation?
Any ideas welcomed.
Neil

The policy covers the same quality carpet, not necessarily the same cost. I have no idea if carpet prices have gone up or down however.0

Thanks for the reply Geri.
I know its a like for like replacement in quality and not value just seems a big difference.
i'll go to the carpet shop tomorrow and see what they say.0 -
I would take it with a pinch of salt what the seller of the house claimed the carpet was worth.... there is certainly a lot who will inflate value of items they've sold/ they own.
Do you know if the carpet is natural fibre or synthetic? Its better to know about what the carpet is than what the former owner of the house claims they paid for it.0 -
It's a patterned Wilton carpet. 6mm nylon.
I worked with the person I bought the house from for a lot of years so I've no reason to disbelieve him other than his memory might be mistaken.0
