Trouble contacting tax office!

Hi everyone,
Whenever I ring the Nottingham tax office on 0845 302 1413, they are constantly engaged.
I paid too much tax in the 2004/5 and 2005/6 tax year, and want to ring and enquire about what to do. But I can't get through.
Does anyone have any alternative numbers for them - I've searched everywhere! Preferably that of someone senior so I can rant to them about how stupid they are for being uncontactable!

The HMRC contact centre that deals with the Notts & Derby area was closed in November following a flood that gutted the building. The calls that would normally be dealt with there are being shared out around the other HMRC contact centres but are probably 'back of the queue' particularly at this time of the year. AFAIK the Notts & Derby contact centre re-opens later this week but will obviously be very busy.
Regards how to claim tax that you overpaid, I would put full details in writing - enclose any original P45s/P60s/P11Ds that you have for the years in question together with a list of where you've worked since April 2004 - include any periods where you haven't worked and state what you did (claimed JSA, education, etc). Keep copies of anything you send.

You can try this one, from the unverified list on "saynoto0870" 0115 9741098Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

Thanks for the help.
I ended up ringing someone in Bradford I believe - taken from the saynoto0870 site.
They have my P60 from the 04/05 tax year; but not from the 05/06. Tried to chase up my former employer earlier but to no avail. I've also been shifted around tax offices. I'm starting a new job soon and they advised to write to that relevant tax office when I've started.
What happens if the tax office has not recieved the P60, neither have I, yet my former employer insists they've sent it? Are they obliged to supply it - can I write them a letter giving X days notice to send it to me?0 -
Pay slips 05/06 as evidence?0

Are you sure you mean P60? It's a document supplied - to you - by your employer summarising your pay / tax etc details for the previous year ... provided you were in their employment at the year end.
So the only way HMRC would have this .. is if you sent it to them. And that doesn't quite square with your original post? The HMRC equivalent is the P14 .. which your employer submits along with P14s for all their other employees. HMRC would have been chasing those, if not submitted, from May 06 in respect of 05/06.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
The women on the phone actually said "P60"; but maybe she meant P14 and was trying to make it better for me to understand.
I went to my employer and asked for it. They still insist that they didn't send it to me. I asked therefore if I could have details of how much I was paid including tax etc for the last fiscal year and she said she didn't keep those details.
Where do I go from here?0 -
You can make a subject access request under the Data Protection Act of both the employers and HMRC. You will then get the detail you require. If you don't then the Information Commissoner will be able to assist.
This may be a good lesson to keep payslips in the future...0 -
I've actually kept all my payslips; unfortunately they're not exactly filed well! I have a large box where I keep all my bank details etc. I'm going to sort it all out after my Uni exams (in two weeks).
Do you happen to know under which section I can make a subject access request to my employer? (I'll search on the Internet for it, but if someone knows off the top of their head it'd save me a bit of time!)
Thanks very much, Cook.0
