How do deodorise the rubber bung from a flask?

I have a lovely flask and the bung bit which seals it is made from black something or other which might be rubber/plastic sort of thing
The flask is clean, the bung is clean the cup (lid) is clean but the bung smells very musty and when I use it for tea it ruins the tea.
What can I use?
I remember shaking it up with some bicarb in the flask and the bung sealed (clamped down) and nearly blew my own face off when I opened the bung.
Its put me off using bicarb!
