How do i investigate a possible problem . . or is this how it is ?

Hi , update from previous posts . . .

I have been taking meter readings from my meters over the last week and here are the readings

Gas (meter states ft3) - used 3 units in 7 days

Electric ( meter states 250 revs per KWH) - used 50 units in 7 days

I am trying to establish a poss fault, i am on fixed online til 2013 with EON paying £152 per month duel fuel which for my house type seems excessive.
Its a 2 bed mid terrace, no central heating , 2 adults 1 child, instant hot water gas boiler, usual electric appliances.

It seems vague but seeing the difference in how many units the electric goes up by compared to the gas i'd say its the electric that is making my bills high , coupling the fact that the electric units cost alot more than gas and i'd say thats my problem.

But if my usage seems high to members then what could be wrong ? i have seen from various posts trying things like turning everything in the house that consumes electric and seeing if the meter still turns. . . . as for my my gas usage my meter is measured in ft3 which i assume eon will measure the usage on the same basis but i dont think my gas usage is a problem plus gas units are far cheaper so i think the problem lies with the electric.

So i am going to try switching everything off electric , could i do this simply by turning off the main fuse switch ??

If after all there is something amiss how could i approach eon , or would it be best to get an electrician to investigate ?

Thanks again !

There are a lot of kWh to each hundred cubic feet, which is what the gas meter measures in. You've actually used roughly 100 kWh of gas there. That's still a fairly low ammount, but this is the summer and I doubt you've really had the heating on over those 7 days (I assume you have some form of heating for the winter, even if it isn't central heating). In the winter I'd expect that to be a lot more, mening that the gas is likely to still be a large part of your bill.

3 gas units is approx 100kWh - around £3 a week for hot water is good.

50 electricity units a week will cost £5 to £6.

So there is certainly nothing wrong with your consumption now - it is low.

However once you start heating with electricity your electricity bills will rocket up.
  • Thanks for answers . . i agree that at the moment usage is low although i feel electric usage is higher than gas at the moment but my problem stems from my monthly payment.

I pay £152 per month for duel fuel which was recently put up by eon from £122 using my actual meter readings.

Bearing in mind this was put up in summer months and coupled with the fact my account is still in debit then what will they expect me to pay in winter or spring . . . if the payments now arent creating credit then there isnt going to be credit to use through winter.

Thats my main point , i could understand paying £152 to clear debt but it isnt , this is my usual continuing payment and its been £100+ for a year and half now rising slowly to current payment . . and still in debit by £100 .

If you're in debit by £100 then you're clearing debt. That's how it works. DD ammounts take into account your expected usage and any debt you currently have on the account. Given that you should really be in credit by this point in the year to tide you through the winter, you can assume that they're counting you as being more than £100 behind...

What you've shown with the above meter reading is that it's not your summer consumption that's causing this, which strongly suggests that it must be whatever heating you use during the winter. What is the heating that you have if it isn't central heating?

  • I have 2 gas fires and 2 x 2kw oil radiators which are on through the night for 12 hours , i know these arent the most efficient ways of heat through winter but thats the only time we use them say autumn to spring.
