Cheap storage suggestions? London only

Am just wondering if anyone knows of a good, cheap storage company.
We can't fit our sofa into our new flat and want to store it for a year.
I've been sent some ridiculously high quotes.

All suggestions gratefully received! We can basically do any area in London but are in W12.

Kind regards, MG

What have your quotes been? Storage isn't particulary cheap, especially at professional secure places.

If you're going to store a large item for a year, you don't do it in one of the most expensive cities on earth. Pay a man with a van to move the sofa somewhere with lower land values, and I'd have thought the saving on storage cost would pay for itself several times over. On the other hand, the sofa would have to be pretty special for it to be worth doing. Do you have a relative with a garage you could leave it in, or something?
  • Agreed: a year's worth of storage costs could be more than the item is worth. You need a pal with a spare room or a garage to stash it in.

We got one for a pretty good rate by asking for quotes at several places. When they call back to chase you up they’d beat whatever quote the competitors offered. This process repeated itself several times and we ended up paying a 3rd of the advertised price and without having to do the bartering; we just forwarded on quotes.

London may be a different ball game though but hiring a van to transport it elsewhere sounds is a good idea. Likewise, to store something for a year even at a good rate will rack up costs over time. Not only do you have to consider if it’s worth it for a year but can you guarantee you’ll need it in a year?

Last thing you want to do it store it, realise your circumstances still can’t accommodate it and end up selling it 12 months down the line.

For other types of furniture I’d look to sell, but when I’ve looked in the past sofas don’t hold their value to well. I'd check on Gumtree though.

Else can you lend it to someone? For free.

How much is your sofa worth ?
you could probably store it outside of London for around £500 for the year , but then the cost of the transport will bump this up

Unless your sofa is particularly valuable, you may well be better off selling it and buying yourself a new one in a year's time (as other people have said). Putting things in storage for more than a month or two is rarely a financially sensible option.

Better than that though, you would probably be best off sorting this out informally. Do you know anyone who has a big house/flat who wouldn't mind having another sofa for a year? Maybe someone who's just moved in and doesn't want to shell out to buy all their furniture just yet? Or perhaps you could even advertise on Gumtree or something to see if any strangers need a sofa for a year? (obviously this last option in particular comes with the risk that they won't give it back/will have ruined it)

Exactly this happened to mt daughter when she moved her sofa would not go through the living room door She didnt want the hassle of advertising it and getting strangers to the house so sent a message to everyone in her email and put it with some photos on facebook She had 6 offers to buy ot within 24 hours Then she went out and bought one that did fit!
