October 2010 I used 504 kWh of gas
October 2009 the figure was 573 kWh

This month is projected to be c. 289 kWh (239 kWh to the 24th)?

This is a reduction of 43% on 2010 figures. :-)

Next month's usages for comparison are

    November 2010 957 kWh gas
    November 2009 927 kWh gas
  • The final figure for October came out as 287 kWh.

Since the start of November i've had the fire on most nights, but no Central Heating yet. This looks like it could continue for another week at least. Currently the monthly gas usage projection from usage in the first 9 days of November is 304 kWh. I think that will be nearer 500 kWh as the weather gets colder, but that's still going to be about 40% less again compared to last year.
  • ...I've calculated on using about 30% less gas based on my typical usage profile in winter....
Fires don't save a lot compared to a good ch boiler, and in many cases are more expensive to run due to high amount of heatloss from ventilation and flue.
If you want to save money, have the fire disconnected from the gas, have the flue and ventilation blocked safely, and draught proof the house.
  • But when the fire is on, the boiler isn't, and I still save lots of money as I therefore don't use as much gas. On any typical night, 4 hours of boiler would use 35-40 kWh. 4 hours of fire usage instead would be 12-13 kWh.
  • So you are not centrally heating your house any more, you are just heating 1 room.

Obviously you will use less gas.

I used to just heat the one room when all I had was a coal fire. Then I got central heating. I would never go back to heating just 1 room.

If you want something you have to pay for it. I would rather pay to heat the whole house.

But this is a money saving site! There's really no need to heat most rooms in a house as much as the ones you use regularly because most rooms in a house are not used regularly. This is why I always laugh when plumbers insist on putting the thermostat in the coldest place in the house (the hallway). Madness.

No, what I said was I'm Centrally Heating my house LESS (See post #4). I now have that option. The CH will still be used, when required. This saves gas and therefore money. On this thread, i'm quantifying those savings. Simple concept really ;-)
  • Suffice to say, savings are even bigger than i'd hoped for, because of the warmer weather.
  • I'm after a couple of new gas fires, can I ask where you got it from?

Ordered through a local reputable firm (that i'd used before). You can probably get them online as well, but the fitting cost was subsidised by the price of the fire, and I couldn't really be bothered with the hassle of having seperate supply and fitting companies, so that's what I opted for. Paid for in two 50% installments, interest free.
