I am on a pre-payment meter for my elecricity only as I have no gas. After hearing bad stories about NPower and looking at the U Switch site I decided to switch from NPower to Ebico, which I did through Ebico's site. After I had been switched over, I got a bill from NPower saying that I owed them £198! How, I thought, can I be in debt when I have a meter? After looking at some threads on this board I came to the conclusion that my meter had not been adjusted for over 18 months to reflect new price rises, but this was the responsibility of the supplier and not me. I spoke to a few buck passing automatons at NPower, but had to threaten them with Energywatch in the end because they were just ignoring my requests for a resolution. Even with this threat they did nothing so I made a complaint on the EnergyWatch website and within a week got a letter from them saying that they have warned NPower to retract my bill within 10 days and give me notification, otherwise they would initiate a prosecution against NPower. Ten days passed but so did Xmas and New Year, and last Saturday's post brought the letter that I had been waiting for. They admitted the mistake had been due to incorrect tarrifs and that they were withdrawing the request for payment. Yay!! One for the good guys.
I note of warning:- NPower know what they are doing yet continue to rob people who are less informed, for that reason alone I would switch immediately, if I hadn't already.
Thanks to Martin, MSE and the posters on this subject-you've saved me nearly £200!

And not only that, I've been paying 2005 prices all this time!!!

Npower were playing similar games 6 years ago.

They started with us before we'd even got our first bill - and took almost 2 years (1 with Energywatch involved) to get it sorted out. Even then it was never really addressed - Npower 'graciously' wrote off the supposed debt rather than cede their position.

Sad to see it's still happening - but glad you got it sorted quickly OP

Even after 6 years they're still blatently and knowingly robbing us folks.
I hope that anyone in a similar situation reads this, goes to EnergyWatch if it does't get resolved through NPower direct, and gets a result. They're getting away with it through our lack of knowledge.

  • When I switched from nPower to EDF for my electricity last October, nPower sent me an estimated final account bill for 400+ units more than what it should of been as I took meter readings on the switch over date which the letter I got from EDF told of. nPower never sent anyone round to read the meter or contacted me to request a final meter reading, they just tried to bill me for those extra 400 units.

This is still currently being sorted out.

It's their responsibility to make sure they organise access and change your meter to reflect any change in tariffs, otherwise they have to forfeit the difference. As you know this, and so do they, they will eventually have to submit in the end. I hope for you that it gets sorted soon.
