Scottish Power

Beware switching to Scottish Power. I am around £100 in credit and they still insist increasing my Direct Debits.

Have you tried contacting them with a reasonable explanation as to why you don't think the DD should increase? They may well say that at this time of year you should be in credit in preparation for the hefty winter period that is looming?

Or they may, as they did with me when I contacted them, not even ask and immediately agree to reinstate the previous amount.

    Hi gefrud,

I f you wish you can e-mail me at onlinecomplaints@scottishpower.com with your account details and I can look in to your Direct Debit increase. However, as Premier says it may be that although you are in credit keeping the payment at its current level may mean that you end up with an outstanding balance after the winter period.

    Kind regards

A £100 credit balance at this time of year is not unusual, and is what the suppliers want to reduce the level of debt you will owe at the end of the Winter.

However, from past bills work out how many Kwh of Gas & Elec you used over the last 12 months and apply them to your tariff to see just what your annual costs are - You can save all the work by entering your annual use and present supplier/tariff into a Switch site which will show the annual costs.

If these figures show that the D/D figure they want is over the top, send SP an Email headed COMPLAINT with your figures, asking them to justify thier figures in writing

I have to agree with the op,scottish power are a nightmare for putting DD up to much,I have to have email contact with them every 3 months to get them to bring it down.,i have done it this way for the last 4 years complaining about bringing the DD down,,and ive never once been in dept to them, infact im always in credit.

This time round I new the review was coming up this month,so i put an extra £100 on the account, and i was already in credit,to save me having to go back and forth with emails, but they still put it up to a silly amount,I have really low bills as I live alone in a small flat and im away alot.

Currently in the email battle with CS to sort it out again,Id love to change from them but im on an old online saver 4 and still cheapest for me,

So advice to OP just email them, complain it might take a couple emails but they normaly bring it down a bit.Good luck:money:

  • Even more annoyingly, last year I paid my mum's £400 fuel allowance into the account as a one-off payment (having emailed SP to say what I was doing). I did it to make sure I didn't 'accidentally' spend the money myself. They didn't bother to reduce the direct debits but after a couple of months they refunded the money to me because the account was in credit! Then only a few weeks later increased my direct debit! Sometimes you just can't win . . .

During my first year with Scottish Power ( I joined in Oct) my account fell into negative in the Spring (only about £20) and they put up my DD amount, when I rang up making the pont that they shouldn't increase my DD because it should even out in the summer they wouldn't listen :wall: needless to say they dropped it again later in the year.
