How to Cut Carpet?

Silly question I suppose.
Not too well or mobile but carpet round logburner has some burn holes and where cats have been fed its gone a bit smelly (have shampooed like mad but to no avail).
Anyhow covered with rugs but smell still in that small patch so was thinking of getting down and just cutting it away - won't show as rugs there anyway.
What is the easiest (and cheapest) tool I need to buy? Don't really have anything that works and hubby ill so don't want to get him hunting round in attic!

best way is a new blade in a stanley knife.
otherwise decent scissors will do the job at a push.

Yep, we had to cut some carpet when taking an old carpet up. Stanley knife all the way.

It does take a little bit of effort - do you have anyone nearby who could help you out with it?

Just be really, really careful when cutting carpet. You can heavy-duty carpet cutting blades for your Stanley knife, so I would recommend those. Always make sure that, should the knife slip, it's not going to cut you or another item in your room!
