Faulty Paint Lid

Hello there, I need some consumer rights advice please.
It may seem a silly question but I purchased some paint from B&Q and returned home to find that the paint tub was on its side and the lid had come clean off with paint all over the boot and floor lining of my car. The lid had come off in transit. Whilst it may seem apparent that the paint should be securely placed in the boot, surely a lid should not come clean off in transit? There is no damage to the paint tub! I have sent a letter to B&Q Head Office & the store I purchased it from. I have also emailed a complaint on the website and received a response stating that B&Q are not responsible for any accidents during transportation. My argument is that the lid is not fit for purpose. The paint is not a B&Q product but a Dulux paint. Should I be contacting Dulux direct?
Thanks.

How are B&Q responsible for the way you secure the paint while its in your boot?0

It obviously wasn't fautly when the OP put the paint in the car, Or i would think they would have returned it straight away.Whilst it may seem apparent that the paint should be securely placed in the boot,
Does this mean it wasn't securely placed?0 -
The lid jumped off in the boot of the car !
Perhaps if it is rolling around the boot of the car.
I would have thought it would be sensible to ensure paint and the likes always stay upright. Paint tins and the like I would wedge behind the front seats of a car where they can't fall over.0 -
Thanks for the replies guys.
Just would not expect a lid to come clean off and think it shoud be made more secure by the manufacturer.0 -
Clearly it's too late for you, but I always make sure that a pot of paint stays on the floor between someone's feet (yes, assuming you're not alone!).0

New paint tin lids don't just open of the own accord unless they haven't been properly fitted, ie, faulty. They are supposed to be sealed, after all.0 -
Well unless he's in the habit of tipping newly purchased paint tins upside down, how would he have known.

But this sounds like one of the either or situations.
A paint lid normally has one of those plastic tabs that you break off to access the paint.
The OP says that the lid came off in transit.
How do we know that someone tried to open the lid instore? How do we know that the OP didn't damage the lid? How do we know that the OP secured the paint properly? We don't.
This then opens B&Q open to every claim of paint spillage because some people don't bother to think. And because of this it may mean that the OP will have to bear the loss themselves. The man without a signature.0
