    Varnish is effectively gloss paint without pigment or to be strictly accurate its the other way round. If its varnish just sand back and overcoat.

    I hope my suggestion of waxing the woodwork for an earlier poster hasn't muddied the pool with respect to Puddy's question.

    Just use a matt or satin varnish.
