what is portugal like?

Hi guys, i have just booked a right cheap weeks break (£400 for everything, flights, hotel, transfers, baggage and airport parking) for myself and DH to Portugal leaving next Sunday 5th Sep.
I know you only get what you pay for and your holiday is what you make it, but am hoping that this is going to turn out to be a proper "bargain"
We have never been to Portugal before and am wondering what to expect, so thought i would gather a few reviews from you well travelled guys on here please.
We are going to a resort called Alvor and staying at the Club Brisimar, from the mixed reports i have read about the resort and hotel, it is pretty quiet compared to other resorts nearby.
We are Self Catering so can someone please enlighten me to the price of things out there and places to go, things to see etc etc.
TIA
It`s nice to be important, but its more important to be nice.
The world is full of people throwing stones at us. Its what you do with them that counts. Build a wall or build a bridge.

It's a lovely small town - lots of little restaurants and bars - beach is beautiful, it is quiet, though I went in October but would.t hesitate to go back. There is a little harbour on one side of town with quite a few nice fishy rstaurants and the beach is along the front - enjoy

The transfer from Faro takes quite a while. You will find Alvor is probably the LAST drop on the coach. Buy water as early as you can, as - depending on what time you arrive at your accommodation - you may not be able to buy it straight away. As said by others, Alvor is QUIET. Beautiful beaches, harbours in the evening are brilliant to walk around. Marvellous fresh fish restaurants to choose from. Even if you don't have kids with you, still do the ZooMarine trip and also Sunsplash waterpark. DON'T buy your trip tickets from club reps, but whan you're in town, use the agents who sit in their tiny offices all evening. They get better rates and don't take such a large commission as the tour reps. Evenings get CHILLY!! You will need jeans/sweaters for evenings. It gets breezy on that coast and you won't regret taking an extra layer.

We stayed at Dunas Do Alvor with a man called Antonio! If he's still there....say Hello from Harry's family!!

    have a wonderful holiday!!

  • Alvor is beautiful, the beaches are pure white fine sand and if you walk along the beach you will find sheltered coves. YOu can also get a taxi into praia de rocha if you want but Alvor has little narrow streets with various bars and restaurants. The people in portugal are friendly too:j:j
  • We stayed near Alvor (Praia de Vau) about 5 years ago. Loved going into Alvor for meals in the night. Found restaurants quite expensive and service extremely slow as everything is freshly prepared but worth the wait.. Went in August and evenings were chilly even then. Wasn't so keen on Praia de Rocha but viseted a few times for a change of scene and it was a much more lively resort. Thoroughly enjoyed our holiday.
