Have a 5 year old Toshiba Satellite Pro used for light browsing and spreadsheet work. Went to upgrade to Norton 2007 and machine will not recognise the CD-Rom. Disc actually spins but drive not shown in My Computer. Any ideas?

was this before or after the Norton upgrade, can you see any other disks if you put them in the drive ?
If you cant see the Norton disk only I'd suggest the CD is busted, if you cant see anything on any disks then it doesnt sound good for the CD-ROM drive

Tried to shut down and re-start then put a music cd in to machine and still does not recognise.0

That doesnt sound good to be honest, if you haven't fiddled with the configuration of the PC lately it sounds like the drive may have died.
If you go to control panel and look at system/hardware/device manager is the drive listed under CD-rom drives ??0 -
If it IS in DM and doesn't show any problems try DELETING it and reboot.
Quite often that will reload the drivers. If it still doesn't find it have a look in the BIOS and do a search for all drives on Auto. If the BIOS finds it then it's likely to be the disc.0 -
*nods* yep, deleting it from CP if it is there is a good way to get PnP to re-recognise it.0
