For those with online solicitors

Im finally slowly getting towards the end of my house purchase (about bloody time
) and in with the last bulk of contracts and bits of paper to sign there is mention of having a local solicitor be a witness to me signing my mortgage deed. Any ideas how much this is going to cost me ? Looks like one downside to getting a solicitor over the net.

I had to do a similar thing for my recent house purchase and it cost me £100 + VAT :eek: for a local solicitor, unfortunately I didn't have the time to shop around for a cheaper solicitor (not sure if I would have found one anyway! :rolleyes:)
I just made sure I kept him chatting for at least half an hour and had 2 cups of coffee to be sure I got my moneys worth

you dont need a solicitor to witness??? where are they coming from??
I have bought and sold many many times and often used solicitors out of my area anyone can witness so long as no relation, just use a neighbour friend or colleague they just need to state name occupation and address.

In the report before purchase that my solicitor has sent me under the section "What you have to do" it says :
Please sign and return the enclosed mortgage deed where shown between the penciled crosses, having your signature(s) witnessed by an independent person who should sign his or her name and address where indicated on the form. The witness should not be a relative. Please do not date this document.
* The mortgage deed must be witnessed before a local solicitor and you should make arrangements for this to be done as soon as possible.
Actually I'm just reading it again and a paragraph later on in this section has a star next to it which you would think refers to the above but that says
Please would you let us know if there is anyone other than yourselves living in the property with his or her full name(s) and date(s) of birth. Your mortgage lender will require anyone aged 16 or over to sign a form to waive any rights they may have in the property in favour of your mortgage lender.
Currently your mortgage lender requires the following person to sign a consent to mortgage form: *. We have written directly to the said occupier(s).

Just to add to this my solicitor got back to me and said it needs to be by someone who is covered by some money laundering law so I'm going to go to my bank instead and then it'll be free
