0870 numbers

Options
Can I start by saying that I do use "say no to 0870" whenever I can. However, I am absolutely sick of having to dial 0870 numbers for anything at all and then being put on hold for ages or left listening to music. TISCALI is one of the worst abusers of this. I incurred £12 of phone bills whilst trying to find out why my broadband wasn't connected. They refused to phone me back and just left me on hold while they did whatever they do at the customer's expense.
I ordered a very expensive TV from DIXONS before Christmas which turned up but wasn't fixed (I paid £300 for fixing) Once again, 0870 for hours on end for no result (they have to e-mail Head Office - no-one else is authorised to take decisions. At least when I had phoned four times the guy agreed to phone me back. And the final guy I got was brilliant and also sent me £45 of Dixons vouchers.:T But why should we have to pay extra to complain about their rubbish service? I really do think we should be making more of a fuss about this.

BTW, it was my doctor's surgery that hit the headlines for using 0870 for patients to call them  . We managed to get that removed by complaining very loudly to everyone who would listen (although they still use an 0845 number......and to think I pay taxes for this.....grrrr

  • All 08* numbers are a rip-off, what makes me laugh is all the different phone providers Vonage, Tiscali etc. offer inclusive call packages (except 08* numbers) then want you to ring an 08 number to sign up.

    Grrr.

Thank you O2 for including 0845, 0870 in my tariff & long may it continue.

I hope that you have invoiced Tiscali for this cost, which is clearly thier fault.

perhaps people should actually check what the after sales support is going to be like prior to purchasing then and factor in if they have an 087*/ 0845 in their decision on which provider to go with?

My new favourite on this is Orange broadband help lines who ALWAYS play the message 'our lines are extremely busy at the moment due to high call volumes and you may experience a delay' (well they have on the three occasions I've phoned them in the past year) then suggest I look at the website to see if the help section can solve my problem. If I could get on the website I wouldn't be phoning them in the first place !!!!!!!!!

Chris, do you have absolute proof of this? As this has been mentioned before at various dates and nothing has ever come of it.

i don't have any problem ringing 0870 numbers as long as the service is worth it, but like you say its awful when you are kept waiting for far too long

I had this with Freeola. A few days after my payment, my CC was replaced with a new one. They then cut me off until I called their 0871 number to give them my updated details even though a payment wasn't due foe 3 weeks!
