Can you letterdrop homes in the area you like? Literally a bit of paper through the letterbox. Internet scammers have a hard time getting themselves inside that real-world approach!

I see your in a village so it's alot harder. Is there a post office/shop there you can put an advert in or see ads. Or local pub so you can ask around. Could be in your local paper. Where I am from originally adverts for my village where put in local paper in next town to us.0

Word of mouth works well in areas like this, since I've let a couple of people know I might be looking I've heard of a couple of places that might come up, as well as someone who told me their parents have a cottage whose tenants are moving soon. Gossip in villages is wonderful!0
