Tips on first time eating fish

Thank you all for your kind replies :AHas anyone established why you are B12 deficient? It's not that common in vegans, and less so in vegetarians (eggs and dairy have B12 in a them). You may be able to consider some improvements to your diet and supplements rather than adding fish to your diet. Check out places like the vegan society for advice and support.
I have spoken with my Dr and he thinks it is the fact that I'm veggie. I have bought some supplements but I'd prefer to get it from the source rather than supplements. From the research I've looked at eggs and cheese only have a small amount of B12 compared to fish and meat.
I'm not a veggie necessarily for ethical reasons, it's just the way I was brought up.
I think fishcakes may well be the way to go.
My flatmate had salmon for tea tonight and I tried the smallest forkfull and it wasn't that bad.

My dad's a retired GP and told me I needed to eat more meat to deal with my anaemia. My GP is somewhat more enlightened, and pointed out that while we're still working out whether it's my haemoglobin, ferritin or B12 that is the cause, I need to make i balance my diet more carefully and plan in my pulses, eggs and dairy. She's not even suggesting I eat fortified cereals as I don't eat processed foods. I'm taking some supplements while we investigate and once the tests are done (tomorrow) and results are back (who knows
) we'll work on supplements, as if any deficiency is serious diet won't be enough initially.
Of course, she may change her mind tomorrow and tell me it's DVT, but anaemia of some kind is more likely.0 -
How about old fashioned fish n chips? May be a good way to get you to try it for starters?0

I just couldn't eat fish again but if you want to start fish then I suppose fish fingers might be a good place to start? Remeber to team the fish with a food you really like , potatoes or veg maybe?
Good luck!0 -

Has he checked whether or not you are short of intrinsic factor? Don't forget that most doctors are completely ignorant about nutrition as they don't study it as part of their training. It might be worth getting it checked out as if you are short of intrinsic factor (and it's possible to be short of this as a meat eater too), then it can lead to pernicious anaemia which is extremely dangerous. Most B12 deficiency is caused by lack of intrinsic factor and not a lack of dietary B12.0 -
Flutterby....the sardine pate posted above sounds good to me....sardines are high in calcium as well as B, smoked mackerel that somebody suggested sounds good to me too....you could make pate with it until you got used to the taste. Lidl (Aldi?) do some really nice canned mackerel in different sauces.
Don't overdo the fish to start, or you will put yourself right off.
Good luck, hope that you find something that works, suffered from low blood pressure in my thirties and it was not pleasant...grew out of it by upping my B intake.

Its probably totally off topic I told you that, but someone else might find it useful
I have Crohn;s disease and had part of my bowel removed a few years ago. My body doesnt store Vit B12 even if I ate things with it in, or took supplements, so I have injections every 6-8 weeks...
As for fish.. I agree with plaice, its a nice tasting fish, and smothered it in tarter sauce and squeeze of lemon, you dont really taste much of it..He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.
If you really cant knit very well, then practise drumming with the needles...

I really like fish! I would think that a fish pie would be a good place to start, especially if you make it with plenty of sauce and a well-flavoured mash on top. Also, fish fingers are not particularly 'fishy' either, and you can have them with ketchup or brown sauce to disguise the taste further, if you like.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0

plaice is probably easiest to try first , its one of the softest fish
Lemon sole might suit you. It doesn't taste fishy or too strong and it doesn't need much chewing.
I think if you try lemon sole first, you can progress to the stronger tasting salmon/smoked haddock/herring options in the future.
I agree with the advice about having fish with your favourite veg etc.
I hope your diet change works well for you.

Another with B12 deficiency that has been diagnosed and treated with injections. I think I said before that I get cravings for fish when my B12 is running low, which for me is every 8/9 weeks. I make a lovely salmon and pasta bake with dill and creme fraiche. I gently cook the salmon and flake it, cook pasta and mix it all together with creme F and dill/ season. Breadcrumbs on the top and grill xI must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0
