Can I get in-ear headphones to watch t.v?

I've searched Google and tried various shops but without success.

I have Panasonic headphones which are great but when I stretch out on the sofa with head on cushion - well it's very uncomfortable.

In-ear phones with independent volume control is what I'm after. I've tried my ipod in-ear phones and plugged in to t.v. but volume is so loud even with t.v. volume down to zero.

Any suggestions from you techies would be gratefully received.

  • there are lots of options, I did try and post a link but it wouldn't let me, but if you head over to google and type in hear headphones volume control then click "Shopping" at the top, you'll find plenty

most will have stupidly short leads but you can buy 3.5mm headphone jack extension cables to make them longer :)

Thanks, I will try another search but do you know if the ones you have seen are compatible with listening/watching t.v?

    add something like this

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/headphone-extension-cordwith-volume-control-33144

not a massive extension with that one but you get the idea
  • as long as the connector is the same as the telly (usually 3.5mm) then they should be fine, obviously you need to make sure the telly output isn't set stupidly high, then fine tune the volume to the headphones with the in line volume.
  • Some TVs have separate volume setting for the headphone socket - so you can turn the speaker right down but still use headphones, or have the headphones louder if you're hearing-impaired. You might need to check the TV audio menus to find the headphone volume setting.

If you plug headphones into the TV, the volume should go up and down according to the remote or TV volume - i.e. turn the volume all the way down, there should be no sound in the phones. OR as Owain says, there may be a separate menu option.

You ARE plugging them into a Headphone socket, aren't you?

What's the make and model of TV?

I have a TV where the volume control does not affect the line out or the headphones jack. Even the mute button doesn't work :(

I think maybe you misunderstood my original post. I don't have a problem with the volume on my current headphones.

    Yes, but you said

"I've tried my ipod in-ear phones and plugged in to t.v. but volume is so loud even with t.v. volume down to zero."

This was the statement I was addressing. What's the make and model of TV?

I wouldn't expect it to affect the Line Out, which convention holds should be at a fixed level for connection to other Line level equipment.

However, if the volume control doesn't modify the headphone level, the TV is either faulty or badly-designed, IMHO.

    Again, what make and model?
